Professor/Associate Professor in Architecture with Specialization in Integrated Energy Design job with NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – NTNU
9 min readAbout the job
The Department of Architecture and Technology has an opening for a permanent faculty position (at the level of Professor or Associate Professor) in architecture with specialization in integrated energy design. We are looking for an architect or an engineer with experience in sustainable architecture and especially in integrated energy design for environmentally friendly architecture.
The position will be part of the group Energy and Environment. The new faculty member is expected to participate in the ongoing research projects that the research group is involved in or is leading.
The principles and methods for integrated energy design are important tools for developing and shaping the buildings of the future. The integration of the energy systems and services in architectural design is necessary to ensure that efficient energy use merges with high architectural quality. New technologies, systems, and digital tools contribute to a society with low emissions, but good and efficient buildings can only be designed when different competencies and methods are selected and used in an interdisciplinary design phase.
The new position will carry out research and teaching on how integrated energy design can be used in the design of healthy and sustainable buildings with high architectural quality and efficient energy use. How can such principles, methods and processes be utilized and further developed to improve the communication and the coordination between the various actors involved in a construction project, and especially the communication between architects and engineers? How can integrated energy design ensure better integration of architecture and the technical systems (building services), the energy systems (renewable energy exploitation, e.g. photovoltaics), and considerations on the life cycle of buildings (LCA, circularity)? The position should also apply methods and approaches that belong to the integrated energy design in the early planning phase at neighborhood and district scale.
You will report to the head of department.
Responsibilities
- To contribute to the teaching activities of the department, and especially to those of the group “Energy and Environment”, which are for the time being concentrated in the 2-year international master in “Sustainable Architecture” (where English is the language of instruction) and the 5-year master in “Architecture” (where Norwegian is the language of instruction)
- The new faculty member will be responsible for one semester in the international master in “Sustainable Architecture”. The title of the semester is “Integrated Energy Design”. The field of integrated energy design focuses on the integration of the knowledge of technical systems for building climatization, energy efficiency, and the exploitation of renewable energy sources to shape good buildings and neighborhoods with high architectural quality.
- The employee will hold, in collaboration with the department and the other scientific employees, the scientific responsibility of the field of integrated energy design. Furthermore, the employee shall participate in the implementation of the teaching plan in accordance with the current study plan, and in the further development of the field and the teaching in the area, including the offer for continuing education.
- The employee will supervise students at master and PhD level within the field of competence.
- The employee will participate in ongoing national (e.g. RCN) or international (e.g. EU) research projects in which the department and the professional group are involved, and contribute to the development of new research projects.
- The employee must also take part in routine administrative work at the department.
The responsibilities of the position may change with the time and may be adjusted in relation to the needs of the department.
